MOUND CITY – Linn County Economic Development Director Jessica Hightower told the Linn County Commissioners on Monday, March 7, that the Youth Employment Grant applications were available to businesses in Linn County.
To get a grant application, Hightower said to call her at 913-795-2274 at the county annex. The applications are due by April 1 and the Economic Development Committee will make their decision at their April meeting. The committee has 10 of the grants to award this year.
Hightower said that she had already sent out four applications.
The grants allow Linn County businesses to be subsidized $4 per hour for hiring Linn County youth, 16 to 21 years old, this summer, said Hightower. The grant requires that businesses pay the youth at least $8 per hour for up to 30 hours per week. The county will reimburse the business up to $1,200.
At a commission meeting in January, Hightower said that certain criteria are applied to the jobs that the businesses are offering. Positions that are more technical will take precedent over things like mowing. Jobs that offer the youth employees skills in learning a trade or operating a business also take precedent.
Businesses must have the position filled by May 15. Businesses that are awarded the grant must have their request for reimbursement in by Sept 1.
