Commission approves hiring of two volunteer firefighters

MOUND CITY – On Monday, Nov. 15, Linn County Fire Chief Doug Barlet gave his weekly report and asked the Linn County Commissioners to approve hiring two firefighters.

Barlet said that the fire department was up to 380 calls year-to-date. The past week the fire department had four Emergency Medical Services (EMS) assists.

The first application was for the Parker fire station, which currently has nine firefighters. The applicant was Achilles Ferrell who works for the sheriff’s office. Barlet recommended that the physical and drug screening be waived as he is currently a county employee.

The second applicant was Douglas Barlet, Barlet’s son, who was applying to work at the Pleasanton station that currently has 12 firefighters. The captain of the station has approved his application.

Barlet said that he just wanted to disclose that this was his son. Barlet recommended that his son be hired pending completion of his physical and drug screening.

The commissioners approved the hiring of both applicants with the recommendations of Barlet that the physical and drug screening be waived for Ferrell.
