Commission approves traffic signs for southwestern Linn County

Updated: Apr 13

MOUND CITY – The Linn County Commission approved new control signs for 23 intersections in Commission District 3 southwest of Centerville on Monday, March 28.

Public Works Director Shaun West said that these were control signs, stop signs, and yield signs that are on unmarked county intersections. These are the recommendations from the county’s sign department in reference to the standards employees trained on.

Commissioner Rick James asked are they four-way, two-way, or what are they for, or what?

West said that it depends on the standard, each one is different, some are stop signs, some are yield.

James, how did they determine which ones are four-way stops, two-way stops or which roads they are put on?

County Counselor Gary Thompson said that it is spelled out in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD). It’s the amount of traffic, the line of sight and other criteria.

James told them that they would be receiving phone calls about why the county was putting a stop sign there.

West said that these are all based on the traffic guidelines based on the MUTCD.

Johnson said that he was the one who talked to West about it, because he had multiple calls about the area because there is a lot of traffic out there.

So that signage is going to require up to four signs per intersection. They cost about $200 to $300 apiece, said James.

West said they are somewhere in that price rang. He added that the signs are being installed on the metal breakaway bases.

Thompson told the commissioners that if they approved this that it should not be published in the legal newspaper until they have the signs in hand since they had to be installed within 10 days of publication.

James asked West where that money was coming from?

West said that as they were talking about it seemed that it was going to be a total of about $4,500 to $5,000.
