MOUND CITY – The Linn County Commission on Monday, Sept. 13, unanimously approved and signed a proclamation to designate Sept. 17 through Sept. 23 as Constitution Week.
Representing the Marais des Cygnes Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Renee Slinkard of Parker said that leading up to Constitution Week, members of the organization go around to local government meetings to promote awareness of the Constitution.
She said that in 1955, representatives of the Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned the U.S. Congress to designated a Constitution Week, Sept. 17 through Sept. 23 to be an annual occurrence. The measure passed Congress unanimously and was signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on Aug. 6, 1956.
Calling the U.S. Constitution the supreme law of the land, Slinkard urged citizens to fly their American flags and read the Constitution.
