MOUND CITY – On Monday, March 23, The Linn County Commissioners heard reports from Public Works Director Jesse Walton about the expansion projects at the Linn County Landfill.
Walton told the commissioners the vertical expansion and berm at the construction and demolition (C&D) landfill has been approved by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), and now the survey company will be out. He said that grade stakes will be set out and posts set up to that landfill staff will know how high they can fill up the vertical expansions.
Walton is working with the state and Tony Mellini of Terracon Consultants, on the future expansion after these new vertical expansions reach their limit.
Walton explained to the commissioners that it is going to take anywhere from six to 10 months for the expansion permit to go through. He said that Mellini said that the landfill should be able to be used for about two more years at its current fill rate.
“What we’ve seen a lot since I’ve been here is we’re having a lot of demolition of old houses and barns,” Walton said. “Those come out there and fill up the landfill really quick in certain spots. So I think if we can get this moving forward here within the next year, I’d really like to get that to where we can expand over there. (east of the existing landfill).”
Walton continued, “Tony’s saying there’s some well monitoring we are going to have to do like we’ve been doing on this one. There’s a lot of other factors involved in it but they say there’s about a couple of years left on our current C&D landfill.”
Walton told the commissioners that Mellini is more than willing to come in and visit with the commissioners sometime in the next couple of weeks at the Monday meetings. Walton said if that is what the commissioners would like, he will set it up.
Both commissioners, Jason Hightower and Jim Johnson, said that they thought that would be good idea.
Johnson said that the county probably ought to get a move on it.
Walton said he would see if Mellini could come in the first Monday in April.
