PLEASANTON – Beginning this Thursday, Sept. 29, Linn County Emergency Management department is offering Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training.

The CERT training teaches individuals to prepare for disruptive events by educating them about potential hazards in the area, emergency response skills, and assembling emergency response supplies. This will help in planning ahead of an emergency to care for your family and your community.

During this free training individuals will learn basic disaster response skills. These skills include fire safety, basic search and rescue techniques, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The class will include classroom sessions and hands-on training of fire suppression of small fires, patient assessments, and treatment of injuries during an emergency.

Linn County residents are encouraged to attend this free training. There will be instructors from American Medical Response Inc. (AMR), Linn County Rural Fire District and Linn County Emergency Management.

Once an individual has attended and completed the free CERT training and meet the required criteria, they may apply to become part of the CERT Team. The CERT team can be activated during an emergency to be an additional resource for emergency responders to use. CERT team members may also be used for additional workforce in non-hazardous functions such as shelter support, crowd, control, and evacuation. CERT Team members must be at least 18 years of age.
