County health department to give COVID vaccine to children

Updated: Dec 2, 2021

MOUND CITY – Linn County Health Department Director Missy Lancaster met with the Linn County Commissioners on Mon., Nov. 8. She reported that the state is out of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, and while Linn County cannot order anymore at this time, the county has a good supply for now.

Lancaster said that now that the Pfizer vaccine has been approved for children ages 5 through 11, the county will be giving them at the health department only. She said that physician Jay Allen, was in favor of starting the vaccines for children only at the health department.

Booster clinics for the Moderna vaccine are available at the health department on Wednesday afternoons and all day on Fridays. She estimated that they had given between 40 and 80 boosters daily this past Wednesday and Friday.

Flu shots are also being given at the health department, said Lancaster.

Lancaster said that she and former Health Department Director Tisha Coleman had been working on a previous grant that needed to be amended.

When asked by Linn County Commission Chair Rick James what was needed at the clinic, Lancaster replied that the other nurse position needed to be filled.
