Hightower wins primary race for Linn County Commission

Updated: Aug 10

MOUND CITY – Jason Hightower, a Republican

farmer and former banker from rural La Cygne, has

won the primary election for the District No. 1

seat on the Linn County Commission.

With no Democratic candidate filing for the race, it is likely that Hightower will be elected to the post in the Nov. 1 general election unless someone mounts a successful write-in challenge.

The unofficial vote count has Hightower receiving 494 votes (slightly more than 65 percent) to Rosemary Long’s near 35 percent. She received 262 votes.

Jason Hightower’s spouse is Jessica Hightower, who is the economic development director for the county. County Counselor Gary Thompson has said that despite the connection, there is no conflict of interest because Jason will not be Jessica’s direct supervisor.

Rick James, current commissioner from commission District No. 1, chose not to run for reelection.
