Jayhawk runners sweep team competition at league meet

The Jayhawk-Linn cross country teams swept the Three Rivers League meet on Thursday, Oct. 14, at Southeast Cherokee. Team scores for both girls’ and boys’ teams put them well ahead of the second-place teams in the two varsity races.


“I am extremely proud of both teams,” said Jayhawks Coach Shayla Long. “It’s exciting to have both the boys and girls as league champs.


“Every person on the team ran well. It’s fun to see their hard work pay off. I think it will give the high schoolers confidence heading to Regionals.”


Gia Schneider was the top finisher in the varsity girls’ race, placing second with a time of 22:53, 24 seconds behind the first-place runner. She was followed closely by Madeline Batcheler, who placed third.


Marissa Batcheler was fifth, followed by Cynthia Cazares in sixth. Addison Randall placed eighth, and Brylee Doleshal came in 11th.


The Jayhawks easily outpaced the Oswego team, which placed second in team competition.


Reese Chapman, a runner with the Pleasanton High School, placed 17th in the race. She was the only Blu-Jay entry in the race.


The Jayhawk boys’ team took the top three places in the meet, with Dakota Wallace winning the race with a time of 18:25. Dillon Champlin placed second with a time of 18:32.

Corbin White took the third-place medal with a time of 18:40. And Chance Proffitt came in 12th with a time of 20:43.


D.J. Meik, the sole runner for Pleasanton in the varsity race, placed 15th with a time of 21:46.

In the eighth-grade, two-mile race, Pleasanton’s Gage McGinnis took the gold medal home with a time of 11:25. He was followed in third place by teammate Elijah Bates.


Jayhawk runners did well in the eighth-grade race as well, taking three of the top-five finishes. Truman Schneider placed second with a time of 11:53, followed by Jaeden Slone in fourth and James Spikenberger in fifth.

William Lloyd was eighth and Brennan Gardner was ninth for the Jayhawks.

In the eighth-grade girls’ race Jayhawk Brea Dawson placed third with a time of 13:28. She was followed by Bri Seely in 11th.


In the seventh-grade girls’ race, Jovee Lusher of Pleasanton posted a time of 14:15, good enough for second place. Blu-Jay runner Maria Neil-Cox was sixth, Rylee Crowder was seventh, Makaila Thomas was 10th, Charlee Brown was eleven was 11th, Baileigh Lister came in 12th and Brenna Shroyer placed 14th.

Coralynn Bukkila placed third in that race for the Jayhawks with a time of 14:17.

In the seventh-grade boys contest, Jayhawk Coawin David placed 10th and teammate Micah Christian was 18th.

Gavin Lawson was the top runner for the Blu-Jays in that race with an 11th place finish followed closely by 12th-place finisher Gavin Lawson. Benson Meik placed 15th in the race.


The Jayhawk coach said she was very proud of her junior high runners as well. “The junior high runners finished their season well and I’m happy for them.”

Both Pleasanton and Jayhawk varsity runners will travel to Central Heights for regional competition this Friday, Oct. 22.
