Memorial Day services planned across the county

This weekend is Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer. In addition to the cookouts, visiting with friends and trips to the lake, the weekend is also for decorating the graves of loved ones and remembering those who died in service of our country.

Several Memorial Day service are planned at cemeteries across Linn County this weekend. Here is the rundown on services in your community:

Saturday, May 28

Linn Valley: Memorial Day Remembrance, 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 29, at Memorial Park. Linn Valley Community Church is hosting a Veterans Memorial Breakfast at 8 a.m. earlier that day.

Prescott: Memorial Day service 10 a.m. by American Legion Hewitt New Post No. 248 at the Prescott Cemetery on Green Street in the southwest corner of the city.

Monday, May 30

La Cygne: Memorial Day service, 10 a.m. on Monday, May 30, at Oak Lawn Cemetery, 209 E. Swan St. Lunch will be served at the La Cygne Christian Church following Memorial Day service.

Pleasanton: Memorial Day service, 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, at the Pleasanton Cemetery on 17th Street west of Laurel Street.

Centerville: Memorial Day service, 11 a.m. at the Centerville Cemetery, east of town on 1350 Road. A fried chicken dinner will be served at the Centerville Community Center following the service.

Mound City: Memorial Day service 11 a.m. by American Legion Hewitt New Post No. 248 at the Woodland Cemetery at Fifth and Elm streets. Jayhawk Superintendent Shawn Thomas will be the speaker.
