PLEASANTON – Officials at the Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge are hoping that the third time is a charm when they host an open house event on Saturday, Oct. 19. And it appears that it will be because the National Weather Service is calling for sunny skies with a high in the 70s – perfect fall weather.
Twice before the open house has been delayed, and the latest attempt was last April. Officials at the refuge have been waiting to show-off the newly completed nature center and paved nature trail. The visitors center is at 24141 Kansas Highway 52, a little over a quarter mile east of the interchange with U.S. Highway 69.
Much of the activity planned for Saturday focuses on outdoor activities. That includes guided walks, archery, slingshots, and the opportunity for visitors to saunter – or roll – along the recently completed 1-mile paved Discovery Trail loop, which is accessible to wheelchairs.
In the spirit of the Halloween season, the refuge will also be hosting a Haunted Nature Trail from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 28. Costumes are encouraged for this event.
