Prairie View board discussed SRO program

Updated: Mar 4

LA CYGNE – With a meeting scheduled between school superintendents and the Linn County Commission on March 7 to discuss the future of the school resource officer (SRO) program, the Prairie View USD 362 Board of Education discussed its position in a meeting earlier this month.

The county commission is asking school districts to pay $12,000 for each SRO that is stationed in the district’s schools. The Prairie View district has three SROs – one each at La Cygne Elementary, Parker Elementary and the middle/high school.

Parker SRO Tyler Parscale made the case for continued support for the SRO program at each of the schools.

The board approved three new dual-credit college classes and two new high school credit classes for the 2022-23 school year. The classes through Fort Scott Community College are Chemistry and History of Civilization I and II. Drama and Advanced Art are high school classes that were approved.

Four new teachers were hired for the 2022-23 school year:

  • Ashton Scholtz - third-grade teacher at Parker

  • David Reynolds - Industrial Technology/CAD/Construction

  • Lacy Stockton - middle school English teacher

  • Alyssa Madden - math specialist at Parker

Six classified positions were hired as well:

  • Katie Martin - substitute bus aide

  • Angela Brennan - substitute bus driver

  • Alexis Jameson - substitute teacher

  • Gregory Regehr - maintenance

  • Shanna Gallagher - food service substitute

  • Tracy Rhynerson - substitute secretary/paraeducator

The board accepted Tracy Cook’s resignation as middle school English teacher at the end of the current school year and Shanna Gallagher’s resignation as full-time foodservice cook.

The board approved moving its meeting date to March 7 from March 14 because of spring break. It also approved closing the high school only on March 30 so the school could host the FFA District Leadership competition.
