This weekend full of Christmas events

Updated: Dec 14, 2021

Linn County residents looking to get out and find ways to celebrate the holiday season are in luck this weekend. With weather forecasts calling for a cool, clear Saturday and a warmer Sunday, events in Pleasanton, Mound City and La Cygne will help keep your holiday cheer alive.

Pleasanton Parade of Lights

The first is the Pleasanton annual "Parade of Lights" at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11. Parade entries decorated with lights will roll down Main Street.

Sponsored by the Light Up Pleasanton Committee and the City of Pleasanton, the parade will travel south down Main Street from the First Christian Church. "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" is this year's theme.

Line-up will begin at 5:45 pm at the church and parade will begin at exactly 6:30 p.m.

It is a festive, outdoor celebration to help get the season in high gear.

Mound City Christmas Celebration

Mound City hosts a Community Christmas Celebration at the Mound City Amphitheater on Saturday, Dec. 11.

A live Nativity enactment will be played out from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. located across the street from the amphitheater.

At 1 p.m. the Jesus Birthday Party begins. Santa will be on hand to tell the Christmas story, and kids will receive birthday cupcakes.

A 1960s Christmas drawing re-creation is also scheduled for the afternoon. Donations from Mound City merchants and grant funds provide toys for the drawing, and gift cards for older teens. The event is for children ages 2 to 18, and drawing registration begins at 12:30 p.m. at the amphitheater.

The La Cygne "Christmas on Broadway"

On Sunday, Dec. 12, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. there will be a Christmas celebration with plenty of activities on Broadway in La Cygne.

Those activities include pictures with Santa, a kids train, face painting, Christmas cookies, hats and gloves, a Nativity scene, hot chocolate and prizes. The Prairie View Middle School choir will perform for a half hour beginning at 3:20 p.m., and the Prairie View Jazz Band will also be performing in the community building from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Businesses that want to set up a booth for free are invited to do so. The event is sponsored by the La Cygne Chamber of Commerce and for more information, contact Chamber President Russell Pope at (913) 757-2100 or City Hall at (913) 757-2144.
