News release / Journal staff report
A feature documentary by Mound City-based filmmaker Sue Vicory, “A Beautiful Place,” will have its Kansas City premiere on June 5th and 6th at the TWA museum, at 10 NW Richards Rd. Kansas City, Mo.
The filmmaking crew on the project also includes work by two Linn County residents: videography Taylor Snyder and screenwriting by Angela Holt.
The film looks at the long-term impact of an ill-fated flight that originated in New Mexico. On February 19, 1955, TWA Flight 260 departed from Albuquerque Airport with 16 people on board en route to Santa Fe. Shortly afterwards, the plane crashed into the Sandia Mountains, killing all three Kansas City-based crew members and 13 passengers.
With this moment as a launching point, the documentary from Heartland Film Productions
explores the emotional journey and stages of navigating tragedies such as this, largely through the experience of Ginny Campbell, who lost her father and two grandparents on the flight.
The KC premiere will have a VIP screening on June 5 at 7 p.m., and general admission screenings on June 6 at both 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the TWA museum. Vicory said the screenning room only seats 50, so it was decided to have more than just a single screening.
Shayna Lamb will cater refreshments at the VIP screening, and that will include hors d'oerves, wine, and beer. Vicory said she expects tickets for the VIP screening and the 5 p.m. screening on June 6 to sell out .
All profits from the premiere of “A Beautiful Place” will go to support the TWA museum.
As with her earlier documentaries, Vicory said she plans to enter this in the regional Emmy competition and send it to Public Broadcasting Service to air.
Ginny Campbell was 21 months old when she lost her father and maternal grandparents in the crash, and for much of her life she has worked through her emotions. The film explores these emotions along with interviewing others who provide insights into how to chart a path to recovery after great loss.
In Ginny Campbell’s case she became a doctor in Kansas City and has dedicated her life to serving patients and providing healing expertise in response to her loss.
Campbell will attend all three premiere screenings and other family members of the victims are expected to join her. Filming and production crew members will also attend the screenings.
On the day of the crash in 1955, a rescue operation was launched, led by the New Mexico Mountain Club working with New Mexico State Police and other volunteers. From this core group the Albuquerque Mountain Rescue Council (AMRC) was founded. The team
filled a need for an organized search and rescue capability in the Albuquerque area and today is a staple in the community.
AMRC is an all-volunteer wilderness search and rescue team specializing in technical rope rescue, winter mountaineering, rock climbing, avalanche rescue, and wilderness medicine, among other skills.
Formal incorporation of the team as a non-profit organization occurred on Feb. 16, 1959, and AMRC was elected to membership in the national Mountain Rescue Association on May 13, 1966. All told, AMRC has been providing search and rescue services to the community continuously for more than 60 years.
Heartland Film Productions has been making films since 2002. Founder and director Vicory has received six Emmy nominations and seven Telly awards for her work to date. Sue’s bio and work can be seen here: www.suevicory.com .
Snyder and Holt have worked with Vicory on several of her last projects.
The premiere is hosted by The Power of One 501(c)(3). All donations are tax deductible. More information on the nonprofit organization can be found at www.mypowerofone.com
Three sponsorship opportunities are still available, and 100% of the funds go to the TWA museum.
Tickets for the general admission premiere are $10 for students and $25 for adults. Tickets for the VIP premiere are $100. Links to premiere details and to purchase tickets:
