Betty Joan Haupt, age 93, La Cygne, Kansas, went home to the Lord Monday, September 29, 2025. She was born, delivered by her grandmother, Clara Culver Hays, a mid-wife, on October 3,1931, in Neosho Falls, Kansas, the daughter of Charles Loren and Florence Effie Hays Scott. She moved to La Cygne, Kansas in 1944. She graduated from La Cygne Rural High School in the Class of 1949.


She worked for Hallmark Cards and Linn County Bank until her marriage to Robert E. Haupt on June 1, 1952. To this union four sons were born, Steven E., Greg L., Mark A., and Bradley D. Haupt. In 1963, she and Bob started Haupt Construction, and Joan kept the books for many years.


Joan’s favorite people were her grandchildren and her church family at the La Cygne Christian Church. The family moved to Haupt Hill west of La Cygne in 1969.  She liked the farm, mowing, gardening, and reading, especially her Bible.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob on June 12, 1993, son Greg on May 26, 2013, brother Doug Scott on December 25, 1973, sister Marilyn Driskell on June 27, 2000, and brother Melvin “Sonny” Scott on June 18, 2023.


Joan is survived by three sons, Steven Haupt and wife Carolyn, Mark Haupt and wife Pam, Bradley Haupt and wife Nancy; daughter-in-law Kelly Haupt; sister, Lorna Kay Olson; ten grandchildren, Kimberly Smith (Harry), Jennifer Williams (Stephen), Brooke Browning (David), Kyle Haupt (Michelle),Jason Haupt (Alicia), Michelle McCool (Mike), Justin Haupt (Brianna), Abby Eldridge(Brody), Robby Haupt (Stephanie), and Ryan Haupt (Sophia); twenty-six great-grandchildren, Shawn Michael Moore, Miranda (Jacob) Williams, Elijah Williams, Preston and Landon Smith, Quinn and Carter Browning, Wyatt and Laikyn Haupt, Darci, Kelsee and Jeremiah Haupt, Hunter, Colton and Hallie McCool, Brynnlea, Westin and Presley Haupt, London, William, Benjamin, Maeve JoAnn Eldridge, Hayden Haupt, Margot, Lydia and Augustus Haupt, and one great-great grandchild, Thax Smith.


Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, October 3, 2025, at the La Cygne Christian Church. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, October 2, at the Schneider Funeral Home, La Cygne Chapel. Memorial contributions are suggested to Celebrate Recovery or La Cygne Christian Church.
