MOUND CITY – On Tuesday, Oct.13, Public Works Director JD Handly told the Linn County Commissioners that he had received a request from a citizen who wanted County Road 1095 from Prairie View High School up to the Miami County line striped.

Handly said that apparently Miami County had striped their part of that road. Handly said that he had not planned on doing any striping but there was some money in the budget for striping this year that had not been used.

Handly told the commissioners, “Coincidentally Straight Line Striping phoned the office that day and asked us if we needed any striping done. So, I said sure, give us a bid for striping that portion. I believe it’s 3.1 miles and they are at $1,950 a mile. So it would be about $6,045.

Commissioner Jim Johnson asked how long it would be before that road was resurfaced.

Handly said there were no plans to repave it in the near future. He said it was in pretty decent condition and would probably be four or five years before it was resurfaced.

Commission Chair Alison Hamilton said she was in favor of striping it. Johnson said he was good with it.

Commissioner Jason Hightower said that the county also had other roads that needed to be striped and asked if this would be setting precedent.

Hamilton asked Handly had a priority list of roads that need to be striped.

Handly said there was nothing out there that he would recommend striping right now because some of them are going to be resurfaced in the near future.

Handly said the citizen’s concern was the amount of teenager traffic on that road coming from the high school.

“We have other roads, too, but like said, there’s like Jason was saying there are other roads,” said Johnson.

Handly said that there was money budgeted for striping this year.

Hamilton made the motion to approve Handly to have 3.1 miles of road on 1095 striped. Hightower seconded and the motion passed 3 to 0.

In September of 2023, former Public Works Director Shaun West informed the commissioners that he had received several requests to have County Road 1077 striped. The minutes of that meeting state that the county doesn’t typically stripe chip and seal roads.

At the January 2, 2024 meeting, Mack Carlisle addressed the Commission concerning re-striping county roads. Carlisle stated that the road from Mantey to Blue Mound was striped several years ago but is in bad need of re-striping.

At the same meeting Brenda Conner addressed the commission concerning the bridges on 1700 Road on her school bus route. Conner also stated that striping needs to be done on roads around Centerville.

During the September 30, 2024 meeting, Conner again asked for striping on 1077.

On November 25, 2024, Rogene McPherson told the commissioners it was difficult to see the road on 1077 without striping.

County Road 1077 has not been striped since those complaints were made.
