Fair's demolition derby draws local drivers, large crowd

MOUND CITY – On Saturday, August 1, the Linn County Fair started the opening entertainment with a crowning of the queen and a demolition derby. The demolition derby is the one night event that features the most local competitiors, and so it consistently draws a large audience.
The demolition derby began with a figure-8 race with 10 laps. Even though there were bumps along the way, Billy Ayers from Ottawa managed to stay out of trouble and stay out front for that win.
Next came the Bone Stock Compacts, the first demolition competition. A lot of local drivers competed in the smash and crush competition. There was one car driving with a rear tire lying flat on the ground. In the end Christopher Bownes from Blue Mound managed to outlast all of the other competitors.
The next groups were the rookies. The rookies were tenacious and fought hard. Heidie Freeman of Mound City managed to outlast several relatives to bring home that win.
Next up was the Fullsize Bone Stock. It was a crowded field of contestants and they all fought hard to gain the upper hand. Several times when one car seemed out, it would restart and rejoin the fray. Bart Ayers managed to survive the chaos to win. He also won the Mad Dog award for being the most aggressive during the Fullsize derby.
There were a couple of additional competitions with cars that looked as if they had been smashed over and over. Yet, in both competitions, these drivers would seek another to smash again and again.
The majority of cars were dragged out or hauled away. Many of the drivers plan to return with repaired wrecks and do it again for the next demolition derby in the area.
