Five Jayhawk wrestlers take regional medals, earn trip to state

Five members of the boys Jayhawk wrestling team earned the privilege of competing at the Class 3-1A State Wrestling Championship Tournament at Hays on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28 – March 1.
Senior Jeremy Willard, junior Denton White, and three sophomores – Landon Higgins, Tanner Holt and Brady Felt punched their ticket to the state show by winning medals at the regional tourney at Fredonia on Saturday, Feb. 22.
The trip to the regional came after the Jayhawks won the Three Rivers League championship for the third straight year in a row.
The team generated enough points to take fourth place in the regional with a team score of 98 points. That included two regional championships, two third-place finishes and a fourth-place medal.
Here is how the individual wrestlers who qualified for state did:
Higgins, 106 pounds with a 32-1 record took first place with a bye and two pins.
Holt, 113 pounds with a 31-13 record earned a fourth-place medal with a bye, a sudden victory in round No. 2, a win on a major decision in his third match and a loss by fall in his bid for third place.
White, 126 pounds with a 34-5 record, took first in his division with three straight wins on pins.
Willard, 138 pound with a 23-18 record, pinned his opponent in the first two rounds, lost his third match to come back and pin his final opponent for third place.
Felt, 150 pounds with a 32-12 record, pinned his first opponent but was sent to the consolation bracket after losing by a fall in his second match. He pinned his next two opponents to earn a third-place medal.
Four other Jayhawk wrestlers competed at regional but did not medal. They included:
Freshman Layne Goodison, 132 pounds with a 12-15 records, with three wins and two losses.
Junior Alex Lowe, 144 pounds with a 9-14 record, two losses on decisions.
Freshman Josiah Haen, 175 pounds with a 4-10 record, two losses by falls.
Sophomore Dean Raise, 190 pounds with a 9-14 record, two losses by falls.
