Jayhawk-Linn wrestler Denton White’s run up to the state championship meet this year was remarkable. White, a senior wrestling in the 138-pound class, ripped through his four opponents in the regional, pinning them all in about a minute and a half or less.
At the state championship tournament in February, White won his first match with a fall but going into the quarterfinals and semifinals, the competition got harder and he won on close decisions, 7-6 and 9-8. But White, with a season record of 41 wins and three losses, had his dream of winning a state championship slip away in the championship round on a major decision for a wrestler from Council Grove.
And while the championship eluded him, White walks away from a high-school wrestling career with 115 pins, placing him at 17th across all classes in the state, a fitting record for an athlete who has been so dedicated to the sport.
Jayhawk boys wrestling head coach Brett Kramer announced White’s accomplishment on Thursday, April 2.
“Congratulations to Denton White for putting his name in the record books for Kansas Wrestling, Kramer wrote in an email “Yesterday the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association updated their records and Denton White has the 17th most falls ever in the history of Kansas High School Wrestling!!!”
Who is currently atop the leaderboard in number of pins? Logan Courtois, a senior at West Franklin who wrestled in the 144-pound class, has 149 falls to his credit. Like White, Courtois made his way to the final match at state only lose on a decision.
White isn’t the only local wrestler who appears on the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association list. Prairie View standout Nathan Sommer, who wrestled from 2006 to 2009, is tied for 14th place with 116 falls.
