ALMA – The Jayhawk-Linn boys cross country team, in an impressive sub-state show on Saturday at Alma, punched their ticket to the state Class 2A championship meet. The girls’ team’s top runner will also compete at the Class 2A state meet at the Wamego Golf Course in Wamego.

All seven boys for Jayhawk placed in the top 21 out of 70 runners. That gave the ‘Hawks a team score of 57 with an average time for the 5,000-meter course of 18 minutes, 59 seconds. Kansas City Christian, the second place team had 78 points (less is better) with an average time 19:17.

The spread for the time for the top five finishers for the Jayhawk boys was 1:17. The top five runners are counted in the team score, but the spread between the fastest Jayhawk runner and the slowest was only 1:46.

Senior Myles Alvarez was the top runner for the Jayhawks, finishing the course in 18:19.7 for a fourth-place medal. The winning time for the race was 17:20.35.

Here is how the rest of the Jayhawks finished:

  • Senior Kollyn Malinowski, 10th, 18:45.27

  • Sophomore Martin Shillito, 13th, 18:53.31

  • Senior Louis Shillito, 17th, 19:25.38

  • Senior Landon Higgins, 18th, 19:36.59

  • Junior Jayden Mayhugh, 20th, 19:55.15

  • Freshman Sawyer Champlin, 21st, 20:05.07

Junior Lily Meyer turned in a solid 22:07.41 for sixth place in the 5K girls competition. That was good enough for a medal and trip to the state meet this Saturday as well. Meyer has been consistently running in the top 10 runners at meets all fall.

The Lady Jayhawks had only four runners, not enough for a team score. Here are the places and times for the rest of the team.

  • Allie Thomas 24th, 24:33.03

  • Adryn Randall, 41st, 27:39.77

  • Haelie Wallace, 28:03, 48th, 28:03.49
