Updated: Dec 25, 2024

Eric and April Castle and their three children, of rural Pleasanton, have been named  one of Kansas Farm Bureau’s 2024 Farm Families of the Year. The Castle family's involvement in the county Farm Bureau organization and commitment to agricultural education led to their nomination for the honor. The family also operates Castle Farms Fresh Meats, which sells pork and chicken at area farmers markets, on the farm or by order. (Submitted photo)

MANHATTAN — Eric and April Castle, of Linn County, are one of Kansas Farm Bureau’s (KFB) Farm Family of the Year honorees.

Each year, a select number of families receive the Farm Family of the Year award for their service and leadership in agriculture, Farm Bureau and their communities. This year there were 10 families.

Eric and April operate a hog farm, raise show pigs for kids in 4-H and FFA, and sell pork to consumers through local farmers markets. They also raise Cornish cross chickens. Together, the couple works on the farm and raise their three children, Bristol, Cayden and Dallee.

The Castles have been active in Farm Bureau for more than 10 years. Eric has served on the Linn County Farm Bureau board in various positions since 2012, and April is the coordinator for Linn County Farm Bureau. Together they served on the American Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee, and April served as the Discussion Meet subcommittee chair.

Eric and April are members of the First Baptist Church of Mound City where they are highly involved. April helps with the Wednesday night youth programs and is a soccer coach for the Upward program hosted by the church.

The Castles understand Farm Bureau is a grassroots organization where farmers’ voices can be heard. They believe it’s imperative Farm Bureau remains strong and active, so those same farmers’ voices are heard in Topeka and Washington, D.C.
