Journal staff report

The National Weather Service has placed Linn County and areas of eastern Kansas and western Missouri under an extreme warning until 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 24.

Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 105 to 110 expected. Additionally, overnight lows may reside in the mid to upper 70s at times, reducing ability to recover from daytime heat. Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
