Man dies in head-on crash on U.S. 169

HUMBOLDT, Kan. – A 29-year-old man from Mound City was killed in a head-on accident on U.S. Highway 169 on Tuesday, Sept. 9. The accident occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. about 6 miles south of Humboldt in Allen County.


According to the Kansas Highway Patrol accident report, Morgan L. Wakefield suffered fatal injuries when the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu he was driving northbound on U.S. 169 crossed the center line and struck a southbound 2018 Ram 1500 pickup. Wakefield was not wearing a seatbelt.


The driver of the pickup, Shawn M. Petterborg, 52, of Stockton, Kan., received suspected serious injuries and was transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. The three passengers in the pickup received minor injuries and were taken to Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute. All of the occupants in the pickup were wearing seatbelts.
