North Carolina driver sustains injuries in head-on collision

PLEASANTON – A 41-year-old North Carolina man was seriously injured on Saturday morning, Feb. 3, when the 2020 Honda Accord he was driving struck a 2024 Freightliner semi-trailer truck head-on. The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 69 near mile marker 95 just south of the Kansas Highway 52 interchange.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash log, the Honda was traveling southbound in the northbound lane when it struck the northbound semi just before 9 a.m.

Douglas L. Honn of High Point, N.C., driver of the Honda, was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. He was wearing a safety restraint when the accident occurred, according to the report.

Roger R. Bane, a 62-year-old man from Las Vegas, Nev., was driving the semi and was not injured. He was also wearing a safety restraint, according to the report.

Randy Hegwald, Linn County Fire Chief, said firefighters from local departments were included in the number of first responders at the scene. Although one witness said the Honda was severely damaged, Hegwald said that an extrication wasn’t needed and that firefighters assisted with patient care and traffic control.
