Prairie View to send five to state track and field meet

POMONA – Two Prairie View girls and three boys secured berths at the Kansas State Track and Field meet slated for Friday and Saturday, May 30-31, at Wichita State University. Both girls and boys teams competed in the regional meet at West Franklin High School in Pomona on Thursday, May 22.


Senior Bree Allen will seek to defend her titles of state champion in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. She was first at Thursday’s Class 3A meet with a first-place finish in the 1600-meter run and third in the 3200-meter run. She won both events last year at state.


Senior Mary Jane Britz will also return to state competition to compete in two events. School record-holder in the discus, Britz placed third in that event with a throw of 119’8”. She won the shot put with a first-place put of 39’9”.


Junior Josh Goodwin placed third in the discus with a throw of 148-1. It was good enough for a trip to state.

Junior Wyatt Atteberry will return to Wichita again this year for a shot at the state triple jump title. He placed third in the event with combined leaps of 42’6.6”


Junior Parker Schwarz will join the others at state after a third-place win in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.15 seconds. During the final race Schwarz shaved .10 of second from his preliminary dash that qualified him for the final but had him in seventh place.


The girls team finished seventh in the regional with 47 points. The boys team was 10th with 24.3 points.

Finishing in the top three places in one of four regionals qualifies an athlete for the state meet. The top 16 times (or distances in the case of field events) for each gender from all four regionals qualify for the state meet.


Here are other results for the girls from the regional:
  • Sophomore Kirby Stroup placed fifth the girls discus and eighth in the shot put.

  • Senior Kally Stroup placed sixth in the girls javelin.

  • Sophomore Harley Wade was fifth in the girls triple jump and eighth in the long jump.

  • Allen was 12th in the 800 meter run.

  • Senior Wylie Teagarden placed 10th in the 400-meter dash.

  • Sophomore Laramie Stevens had a fourth-place finish in the girls pole vault with a vault of 9’0”.

  • The girls 4x400-meter relay team had a fourth-place finish with a time of 4:16.08.


Boys results included:
  • Atteberry was 11th in the 400-meter dash.

  • Junior Will Caldwell was 13th in the 400-meter dash.

  • Freshman Ethan Teagarden was in a three-way tie for seventh place in the pole vault.

  • Senior Jacob Law was 12th in the boys discus.

  • Sophomore Nate Herring was 12th in the shot put.

  • Sophomore Carter Browning placed fourth in the boys javelin with the throw of 150’0”.
