Quilt guild unveils patriotic 250th anniversary quilt that will be raffled off

A red, white and blue-themed quilt pieced together from individual blocks made by the members of Material Girls was unveiled on Thursday, July 16, at the quilting guild's monthly meeting. The quilt will be auctioned off to raise money for the organization.
Raffle tickets sales deposited so far are up to $355. Prices are $5 for one ticket, $20 for five tickets.

Olathe Quilt Guild, Aug. 11
Jayhawk Blast at Mound City ball fields, Sept. 12
Jolly Boutique at Jayhawk-Linn High School, Oct. 10
Fall Festival at Mound City Historical Park, Oct. 11
The drawing for the quilt will take place at the Mound City Historical Park at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11.
Twenty-two members present and four visitors were there for a presentation by guest Lisa Hirsch. Hirsh is a member of the Olathe Quilters Guild and the Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild. She gave a very informative talk on color in quilting, including color combinations. She had several samples that were given away to members – including the four visitors who became members – via a drawing.
A new challenge was offered – make a quilted item with two colors using your initials. And the second clue for mystery quilt was distributed and discussed. It will be interesting to see what the final quilt looks like.
It had been decided to use 16 leftover quilt blocks from Opportunity Quilt as foundations for Quilts of Valor. A sew day to work on tops was July 11 at the Pleasanton Library. The group's intent is to give Quilts of Valor to local veterans. One quilt top shown was made by Shelley Cochran and Jean Sluder. Shelley will quilt. Additional sew days may be soon.
Next meeting will be on Aug. 20. Dues for new members was reduced to $10 for the rest of the year.
