Two killed in a head-on accident on 200 Road

MOUND CITY – Two people were pronounced dead at the scene and another person was transported to a regional medical center with suspected serious injuries following a head-on collision in southern Linn County on Saturday, July 29.


According to the Kansas Highway Patrol Crash Log, emergency personnel were summoned to the crash scene on 200 Road just west of the Jackson Road intersection shortly before 5 p.m.

Dennis N. Mayes, 62, of Mapleton and Elizabeth A. Mayes, 59, of Fort Scott were pronounced dead at the scene. Clinton C. Barker, 21, of Centerville was taken to Overland Parker Regional Medical Center with suspected serious injuries.


Dennis Mayes was driving and Elizabeth Mayes was a passenger in a 2011 Ford Edge that was westbound on 200 Road when the vehicle struck a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup being driven eastbound by Barker. According to the report, both vehicles crossed the center line to hit head-on.


The Edge spun into the westbound ditch, and the pickup went into the eastbound ditch and then rolled on its top. All three people were wearing seatbelts at the time the accident occurred, according to the report.
