William 'Ben' Kennedy

March 21, 1935 — August 14, 2026

Osawatomie, Kansas

William Benjamin “Ben” Kennedy, age 91, of Osawatomie, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Olathe Hospice House in Olathe, Kansas.

Ben was born March 21, 1935, in Rantoul, Kansas, the son of Charlie Evert and Dorothy Marie (Johnston) Kennedy. He was one of four boys and grew up in Rantoul, where he attended school and graduated from high school.

Following high school, Ben enlisted in the United States Army, where he proudly served nearly 10 years. During his military service, he attended machinist school and trained in the trade that would serve him throughout his working years. During his service, Ben was stationed at Fort Riley, California, Germany, Chicago and New Mexico, before returning to Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1963.

While stationed in Germany, Ben met Edda Belts. The two were married on September 6, 1956, in Germany. They were blessed with five children, Dale, Monika, Margie, Rosie and JoAnn. Their marriage later ended in divorce.

Ben eventually returned to Osawatomie, where he would make his home for the remainder of his life. On June 26, 1965, he was united in marriage to Anni Friedl in Osawatomie, Kansas. Together they were blessed with two daughters, Tina and Anita. Ben and Anni made their home in Osawatomie for 58 years, building a life and raising their family together.

Ben spent 54 years as an over-the-road truck driver, a career he truly enjoyed. For 10 of those years, Anni joined him on the road as his driving partner. Ben was well known by his CB handle, “Big Ben,” and for driving his unmistakable purple truck decorated with daisies. His love of the open road, trucking and the people he met along the way became an important part of his life.

Ben will be remembered for his hardworking nature, his colorful personality, his dedication to his family and his many years behind the wheel. He leaves behind a legacy of memories that will be cherished by his family and all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anni; his parents, Charlie Evert and Dorothy Marie Kennedy; and his three brothers, Willis, Harold and Robert Kennedy.

Ben is survived by his children, Dale Kennedy, Monika Troutman, Margie West, Rosi Kennedy, JoAnn Oborny, Tina Kennedy and Anita Kennedy; 20 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren with one on the way and many extended family.

Ben’s family is grateful for the many years they were blessed to share with him and will carry his memory with them always.
