Eight Jayhawk-Linn athletes will be headed to the state track and field championships at Wichita State University on Friday and Saturday following their success at the Class 3A regional at Fredonia on Friday, May 22.
The girls will be sending a larger contingent to state, but the two boys headed to Wichita include a newly minted record-holder and hurdler with plenty of potential.
Senior Hurdler Brea Dawson is regional champion in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.67 seconds. That was an improvement on her time of 15.96 seconds at the Three Rivers League meet a week earlier. She will be looking to close out her high school career with gold at the state meet.
Seniors Brenlyn and Brilyn Bogan will be competing in the high jump at the state meet. Both girls cleared the bar at 5’-0”, however, Brenlyn placed fourth and Brilyn placed fifth.
Brenlyn won the event at the league meet with a 5-2 leap while Brilyn’s best jump at 4-8 put her in seventh. The sisters in their distinguish high school sports careers will have another chance to battle it out at Wichita.
Senior Kiera McGrew will be throwing the discus at state after a fifth-place finish at the regional. Her throw of 111-7 improved over her 104-11 toss at the league meet. She won second at league.
Both girls relay teams finished in third place at regionals and will now shoot for a state title.
The 4 x 800-meter relay team turned in a time of 10:38.15, a significant improvement over their 11:54.73 time at league, which still earned them third place. The 4x800 team includes the Bogan girls, senior Adeline Randall, and freshman Ren Wade.
The 4x400 team took third place at regional with a time of 4:19.72. The team won first at league with a time of 4:24.96. Team members include the Bogans, Wade and Dawson.
Myles Alvarez, who ran for the Pleasanton Blu-Jays cross country squad last fall and won a trip to state in that event, transferred to Jayhawk-Linn. His impact on the team has been immediate.
Alvarez, a junior, broke the JLHS record for the 800-meter run by turning in a time of 2:01.08 at regionals. That was good enough for a third place finish and a trip to state in that event. Alvarez did not run the 800 at league, but placed first in the 1600- and second in the 3200-meter events.
Josiah Randall, a rangy sophomore, trounced the competition in the 110-meter hurdles at league with a time of 16.84. He bettered that time with a 16.59 at the regional and won a trip to state.
