Fair, start of school keeps health center staff on the go

PLEASANTON – With the beginning of school and the Linn County Fair in August plus the arrival of the mobile mammogram coach in July, the summer for the staff at the Linn County Health Department has been very busy.
During a report to the Linn County Commission on Tuesday, Sept. 8, LCHD director Amanda Snyder said that in addition to the nearly 400 client appointments during July and August, the staff also helped with the mammogram coach on July 15.
Twenty-eight women received mammograms on that day, and the coach is expected to return on Dec. 2. Women interested in scheduling an appointment on that day should call the health center in Pleasanton at 913-352-6640.
The beginning of the Linn County Fair, which ran Aug. 1 through Aug. 8, saw the staff providing a breastfeeding and changing booth in the 4-H Building on the fairgrounds. The booth was available throughout fair week, Snyder said.
In addition, the department sponsored a booth at Kids’ Day at the fair, and staff handed out first aid kits as well as information on the department’s programs. (See page XX for more information.)
At the same time as the fair was in progress, teachers were attending required in-services being held at school districts across the county.
Health department nurses provided CPR training for teachers and coaches at Prairie View.
Upcoming outreach activities and training by LCHD staff include:
• Staff will complete Car Fit training that focuses on the older generation driving.
• Provide breastfeeding/changing booth during the Sugar Mound Arts & Crafts Festival.
• All LCHD Staff will complete Mental Health First Aid Training for Youth and Adults. The two-day,16-hour training will mean the office will be closed to clients on Oct. 6 and 27.
• Immunization Clinics at Prairie View schools.
• Hearing/Vision Screenings at Jayhawk Junior/Senior High and Jayhawk Elementary School.
• SEK Breastfeeding Coalition Meeting to include hands-on training on Sept. 18.
• Flu clinics will be scheduled as soon as the staff knows the date the vaccine will be
arriving.
• Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition Yearly Conference in October
• Snyder will be presenting at a breastfeeding basics and troubleshooting training at the Kansas Governor’s Conference for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect in October.
