Jayhawk Blast is back this Saturday. After some experimenting with dates in July and June to try to beat the oppressive heat of midsummer, city officials moved the annual celebration to September. And that move will pay off with cooler than expected temperatures as the celebration kicks off.

The event will take place north of the ballfields at 7566 Nickel Road.

This year’s Blast kicks off with a car show and a cornhole tournament, both of which run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. with registration starting at 4 p.m. A petting zoo also opens from 4 to 6 p.m., and bounce houses will be open from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Food vendors will set during the event, and more kids games will take place that evening.

At 5 p.m. the live music starts with an hourlong performance by Brea and Taylor. Two-lane highway takes the stage at 6 p.m., and the Michael Pierce Band begins performing at 7:30 p.m.

The evening will end with a fireworks display that begins at dusk.
