Jayhawk boys, girls win gold at Fort Scott cross country meet

Jayhawk girls and boys cross country teams took first place varsity team finishes at the meet at Fort Scott on Thursday, Sept. 12. (Screen capture / USD346.org)



FORT SCOTT – Jayhawk varsity cross country runners swept the team competition at Fort Scott on Thursday, Sept.12. That included a 2,3,4-finish by the varsity boys team and three top-10 finishes for the girls.


Brothers Simon and Louis Shillito placed second and third respectively. Simon, a senior, turned in a time of 18:34.21, and Louis, a sophomore, was a few paces behind with a time of 18:53.50. Sophomore Kollyn Malinowski was on Louis’ heels and placed fourth with a time of 18:53.00.


The team score was helped with a 14th-place finish by freshman Daniel Brake with a time of 19:34.71. Truman Schneider placed 22nd with a time of 20:21.00, and Jayden Mayhugh was 28th with a time of 21:12.10


The Jayhawk boys team accumulated 37 points, fewer than second-place Iola with 59 points.


The Jayhawk girls varsity team scored 26 to win their race, beating out Labette County with a score of 30 points.


Freshman Gabby Parson, junior Adeline Randall, and freshman Lily Meyer finished the varsity race within four seconds of each other. Parsons was seventh with a time of 23:32.73, Randall was eighth with a time of 23:35.21, and Meyer was ninth with a time of 23:36.89.


Freshman Allie Thomas turned in a time of 24:12.96 for 14th place, senior Brylee Doleshal was 16th with a time of 24:55.80, and freshman Haelie Wallace placed 16th with a time of 25:43.30.


In the boys junior varsity race, freshman Brayden Robertson finished 15th with a time of 23:08.70, and junior James Spitzenberg placed 34th with a time of 26:28.80.


Alayna McCarty was the top finisher for the Jayhawk junior varsity girls team. She place fifth with a time of 26:24.60. Sophomore Bailie Wilson placed 20th with a time of 31:04.00.


The team will travel to a meet in Wellsville on Thursday, Sept. 19.
