The cold, blustery weather on Saturday evening, April 5, had Jayhawk-Linn High School officials scrapping at least one tradition – what kind of transportation groups and couples arrived in for the walk-in. Instead, the students took their places down a hallway next to the gym at Jayhawk Elementary School.

As the couples or groups of students entered the gym and were announced by Nicki Traul, it didn't matter to the packed bleachers what transportation they took to get there. As each couple or group of students was announced, the parents, grandparents, siblings – and those just there to see the show – applauded warmly as prom-goers stopped in front of a backdrop worthy of the "Hollywood Nights" theme.

After the last couple was announced students, friends and families took the opportunity for photos before heading into the school's cafeteria where a portrait photographer and deejay were ready for the dance. Following the dance, the students were transported to the Lenexa Community Center about 10:45 p.m. for after-prom activities, returning in the early morning hours.
