Jayhawk vaulters, jumpers, hurdlers headed to state meet

POMONA – Jayhawk-Linn pole vaulters owned the field event at the Class 3A regional track meet at West Franklin High School in Pomona on Thursday, May 22. So did Jayhawk’s top hurdlers and high jumpers.


From the boys team, senior Gabe Springer and junior Truman Schneider placed in the top two spots in the boys vaulting competition, both earning a trip to the state tournament in Wichita this Friday and Saturday, May 30-31.


Springer placed first with a vault of 15’0”; and Schneider was second with a vault of 14’0”. The top three finishes in each event is awarded an automatic berth at the state meet at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium.

Senior hurdler Trenton Broyles scored double gold by taking first place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.16 seconds and first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.31. Senior Ryan Broyles earned a trip to state with a fifth-place finish in the 110-meter race with a time of 16.15. Ryan took sixth in the 300-meter race with a time of 42.33 but didn’t make the cut to compete at state.


Senior Cooper Johnson cleared the bar in the boys high jump at 6’2” to take second place in the regional and earn a berth at the state meet. He was one of five jumpers that cleared the bar at that height across the regionals.

For the girls team, junior Brea Dawson continued her success in the hurdles by turning in a time of 15.44 in the 110-meter event for a third-place finish and a trip to state. She ran the 300-meter hurdles in 49.78 for a fifth-place finish but did not make the cut for state in that event.


Junior Brenlyn Bogan had a leap of 5’0” in the girls high jump, taking fourth place and qualifying her for a trip to state.


The boys team placed fifth with 56 points, and the girls team was 10th with 22.5 points.


Here are results for boys in other events.

  • Sophomore Louis Shillito placed eighth in the 800-meter run.

  • Freshman Simon Shillito placed seventh in the 1,600-meter run.

  • Sophomore Brayden Johnson was 12th in the 400-meter dash and 19th in the 100-meter dash.

  • Senior Dayton Eastwood placed 19th in the discus.

  • The boys 4x100 meter relay team placed sixth, the 4x400 relay team was ninth, and the 4x800 relay team was seventh.


Girls team results included:

  • In the 800-meter run, freshman Gabby Brake placed sixth and Adeline Randall placed ninth.

  • Brenlyn Bogan placed ninth in the 400-meter dash followed by junior Kiera McGrew in 11th.

  • Dawson placed 7th in the long jump.

  • Freshman Lily Meyer was 11th in the 3,200-meter run.

  • Sophomore JoVeia Clark was 13th in the shot put.

  • Junior Brilyn Bogan was sixth in the high jump and 11th in the javelin.

  • McGrew was 12th in the discus.

  • Freshman Allie Thomas was 9th in the 100-meter dash.

  • The 4x400-meter relay team placed fifth, and the 4x800-meter team placed sixth.
