MOUND CITY – A man was taken into custody in the morning hours of Tuesday, May 6, after allegedly carjacking a man at knifepoint in Parker and forcing him to drive to La Cygne. At some point along the way, the men began fighting and the victim was apparently stabbed and injured.

Damien Scott Patterson of Paola has been charged with alleged attempted first degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated battery by knowingly using a weapon that could cause bodily harm, disfigurement or death.

He remains in custody on a $500,000 bond pending further investigation of the crime. As of Wednesday evening, no formal charges had been filed.

According to a release by Linn County Sheriff Kevin Friend, county dispatch received a call just before midnight on Monday, May 5, from a man saying he had been stabbed in the parking lot of the One-Stop convenience store in Parker.

According to the victim, he was waiting at the convenience store to meet a friend when Patterson approached his vehicle and began talking to him. People familiar with the incident said the victim was employed at the store.

According to the sheriff’s report, Patterson allegedly pulled a knife and forced the victim to drive him to La Cygne.

During the drive, the victim abruptly stopped the vehicle and had an altercation with the suspect, who then allegedly stabbed the victim, according to the report. Following the stabbing, the suspect got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

In the morning hours of May 6, the suspect was located by an acquaintance and was taken to Miami County. After the sheriff’s office was notified that the subject had been found, Miami County authorities were notified and Patterson was taken into custody and subsequently transferred to Linn County.

The Parker Police Department assisted with the incident, according to Friend.
