Material Girls, the Linn County quilters guild, met Oct. 15 for its regular monthly meeting at the F&M Community Center in Mound City.  Twenty three members and three guests were present.

Guest speaker for the evening was introduced. Cindy Nice, from Lenexa, is a member of the Olathe Quilters Guild. Her topic was “What Does a Judge Look For?”

Cindy taught home economics many years in California and Kansas.  She has judged 4-H and open sewing and quilting classes in several counties, including Linn County the last two years. The group greatly enjoyed her presentation.

Those who attended Blue Valley and Miami County quilt shows on Sept. 26 talked about the boutique items and beautiful quilts they had seen.

Johnna Schreckhise was a big winner of a basket full of fabric and other “quilty” things. Rhonda McGown won, through a raffle, a “chicken bag.”

On Oct.10, Vickie Thorson rode in the Sugar Mound Arts and Crafts parade showing our patriotic raffle quilt. The quilt was shown at Mound City Historical Park on Oct. 10th and 11th. Chasity Ware won the quilt at Sunday’s drawing.

Proposed quilt logo drawings were submitted by Jean Sluder and Brenda Craig.

More information is needed before deciding to establish a Quilts of Valor chapter.  Rhonda McGown is in charge.

If 2027 membership is paid prior to Dec. 31, those members’ names will be entered in a drawing for a refund.

The Nov. 19 meeting will be at the Christian Church in Mound City at 6 p.m. There will be no meeting in December, but meetings will resume Jan. 21, 2027.
