Organizers of the Material Girls unveiled the patriotic quilt made by its members at its meeting on Thursday, June 18, 2026. Eighteen members and one visitor attended the meeting of the Linn County quilt guild at the F&M Bank Community Building at Mound City.

After piecing together blocks for the queen-size quilt there were extra blocks that will be used to make a lap-size quilt. Both quilts will be raffled off this fall. Tickets are priced at $5

for one or $20 for five.

The winner will have a choice of either quilt and the winner of the second drawing gets the remaining quilt.

First showing for the quilts will be at “Colonial Days Live Like It’s 1776” at

Mound City Historical Park on July 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Drawings will be on Saturday,

October 10, at the Park’s Fall Festival.

The group also discussed making Quilts of Valor. More information needed. We

discussed making charity quilts. A group sewing date of July 11, is scheduled at

the Pleasanton Library.

Members showed the items made with the “orphan blocks” picked up at the

last meeting. Many unique and beautiful items were displayed***.

Lisa Hirsch, Olathe high school art teacher and member of the Olathe Quilt

Guild and the KC Modern Guild will be the guest speaker at the July 16 meeting.

She will talk to us about choosing colors. Four color wheels were given away by

drawing to members present.

Rhonda McGown showed a spool of chenille strips and the pillow she used the strips on– the modern method.

Maribeth Kehl showed the small quilt she made the old-fashioned way by using scissors to cut. Members are requested to bring other the tips and tricks portion of each meeting.

Nine members signed up for the Mystery Quilt challenge. First clue was handed out. Clues will be given out monthly. The completed quilts will be a surprise to all.

The next meeting is July 16. Attendees were asked to bring a friend. Meetings are also open to new quilters or those who are interested. Dues are reduced to $10 for the remainder of the year.
