Mine Creek Battlefield to host annual Heritage Day on Saturday

PLEASANTON – The public is invited to enjoy a full day of historical demonstrations, education programs, music and living history activities highlighting the people, military units and events connected to the Civil War and the Battle of Mine Creek.
Heritage Day offers visitors an opportunity to learn more about Civil War-era military life and experience demonstrations that help illustrate the equipment, tactics and experiences of soldiers during the period.
The schedule includes:
10 a.m. – U.S. Flag raising at the museum
104:30 a.m. – Artillery talk and demonstration
11 a.m. – Generals Lee and Grant program (inside visitor center)
11:30 a.m. – Cavalry talk and demonstration
12:30 p.m. – Second Hand Strings music (inside visitor center)
1:30 p.m. – Tactical demonstration (on Mine Creek Battlefield Foundation property)
2 p.m. – Infantry talk and demonstration
2:30 p.m. – Buffalo soldier program (inside visitor center)
3 p.m. – Artillery talk and demonstration
4 p.m. – Cavalry talk and demonstration
The Battle of Mine Creek was one of the largest Civil War battles in Kansas and one of the largest cavalry engagements during the war. On Oct. 25, 1864, Union forces attacked Confederate troops during Maj. General Sterling Price's retreat from Missouri, capturing more than 600 Confederate soldiers, including two generals. Today, Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site preserves the site and helps visitors understand this important chapter of Civil War history along the Kansas-Missouri border.
