Prairie View collecting gift items for soldiers, Marines

LA CYGNE – In the spirit of Veterans Day, Prairie View students are being given a chance to honor current members of the military.


Through contacts at both Fort Riley and Camp Lejeune, Prairie View students have the opportunity to participate in a stocking stuffer program at Fort Riley, which is located near Manhattan, Kan., and military care package program at Camp Lejeune, a Marine base camp in North Carolina.


• Donate money (extra change in your pocket?) - Donation buckets are in the offices at PVHS, PVMS, Parker Elementary, and LaCygne Elementary

• Collect items from the list below to donate - Get items to Mrs. Nickelson or Mr. Russell at PVHS by Nov. 17

• Write a "Thank You for Your Service" letter or card.


All money, items, and letters need to be given to teachers Christie Nickelson or Jeffery Russell at PVHS by Nov. 17. Packages will be sent to Fort Riley and Camp Lejeune before Thanksgiving break.


Items suggested include:

1. AA Batteries

2. Socks

3. Individual snack packs - trail mix, granola bars, Chex mix, snack crackers, cookies.

4. Single serving size powdered drink mixes - tea, lemonade, flavored water.

5. Playing cards

6. Beef Jerky, meat sticks

7. Small, travel sized games like checkers or chess

8. Gum, mints

9. Hand warmers

10. Nuts or dried fruit in resealable containers or packages
