Prairie View to send three to state wrestling tourney

Three Prairie View boys will be headed to the Class 4A state wrestling tournament on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28 – March 1, in Salina.


Juniors Parker Schwarz and Josh Goodwin and freshman Ryan Nickell will be looking to bring home medals from the state event.


Here is how the state qualifiers did at the regional tourney in Labette on Feb. 22:


  • Nickell, 106 pounds with a record of 20 wins and 11 losses, had a first round bye followed by a second match pin. He lost his third match on a technical fall but came back for a third-place medal with a 15-8 decision.


  • Schwarz, 215 pounds with a 27-8 record, placed second with a bye, two pins and a loss in the championship round on a 4-1 decision.


  • Goodwin, 285 pounds with a 24-8 record, began with a first-round bye followed by a loss on a fall. He had three straight pins before losing on fall to take fourth place.


Other Buffalos competing at the regional tourney who did not qualify for state included:

• Freshman Chance Briggs, 113 pounds who went 0-2 for an 11-18 record for the season.

• Sophomore Lincoln Schaffer, 132 pounds, going 2-2 for a 26-21 record.

• Senior Levi Benedick, 138 pounds, 3-2 in the tourney for a 29-17 record.

• Senior Coltaun Barlett, 175 pounds, 1-2 in the regional for a 13-27 record.

• Sophomore Nolan Boyd, 190 pounds, 2-2 in the regional for a 20-23 record.
