In the first round of substate playoffs, the Pleasanton boys and Prairie View girls teams leveraged home court advantages into wins.
The fifth-seed Blu-Jays knocked off 12th-seeded Eureka 74-67 on Thursday, Feb. 27, in a southeast regional Class 2A bracket. The win pushes their season record to 12 wins and eight losses.
The Blu-Jays will host 13th-seeded Douglass (6-14) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, in round two. Douglass upset fourth-seeded Uniontown (12-8) by one point, 49-48, on Uniontown's home court on Thursday.

The Prairie View girls hosted the Iola girls on Thursday in the Class 2A regional, and for the third time this year handed the Mustangs a loss. In a defensive battle, the seventh-seeded Buffalos' (13-6) built a comfortable double-digit lead at halftime, only to see Iola chip away at that lead, twice coming within 2 points of tying the game.
But a fourth-quarter 3-pointer by Bree Allen, followed by a trey by Kally Stroup, and Rian Stainbrook battling three-on-one in the paint to make a couple of crucial baskets gave the Buffalos some room as the final seconds ticked down. Stalling by Prairie View in the last minute saw Allen and Stroup sinking free throws to seal the 39-35 win.
Prairie View will travel on Tuesday, March 4, to face second-seeded Neodesha (15-3) on their home court. Game time is 7 p.m.
Also in action on Thursday were the Jayhawk girls in the regional Class 3A tournament. The Jayhawks (13-7) went into the first round of substate as sixth seed playing at Frontenac, 11th seed with a 6-12 record.
However, Frontenac overpowered the Jayhawks, 47-29, ending the Jayhawks season.
On Friday, the Jayhawk boys team traveled to Garnett to face Anderson County on its home court in the Class 3A division playoffs. The 'Hawks couldn't stop the offense of the Bulldogs, suffering a 73-31 loss. The loss ended the Jayhawks season with a 9-12 record.
The losses by both Jayhawk teams sheds light on the difficulty Jayhawks can expect in regional and state play in all sports after being bumped up to Class 3A from 2A this season. Jayhawk-Linn High School one of the smallest schools in the Class 2A division.
The 15th-seeded Prairie View boys didn't fare any better than the Jayhawks in its 3A match-up. On the road against league opponent and second-seeded Burlington, the Buffalo suffered a 67-27 loss, leaving the team with a 2-17 record as its season ended.
The Pleasanton girls team traveled to No. 2 seed Dexter for their first game of their Class 2A substate. The 14th-seeded Blu-Jays couldn't stop the home team, and their season ended with a 46-12 loss.
