MOUND CITY – The Linn County Sheriff’s Office reported on Tuesday, Jan. 28, that deputies and members of the Linn County Rural Fire Department found the bodies of two children who had been missing trapped under the ice in the Lake Chaparral development.

The sheriff’s office received a call around 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, that the children had not been seen for several hours. The sheriff’s office called in the county fire department to help with the search.

According to a press release, the searchers found evidence that the children had been around the lake, and deputies used an aerial drone to search for them. Their lifeless bodies were discovered trapped under the ice. The Overland Park Fire Dive Team was called in to assist in the recovering the victims.

The identity and age of the children has not been disclosed, and the sheriff’s office says it is still in the early stages of its investigation.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to family and friends that have been affected by the tragedy,” said the statement from the sheriff’s office.

The last few days of warmer daytime temperatures has caused ice on lakes, ponds and streams to thaw, making walking on the ice dangerous.
