Fair queen candidates push to sell tickets by Saturday's deadline

It’s a busy week for four Jayhawk-Linn seniors as they face pressure to sell advance tickets to the Linn County Fair and Rodeo, which begins its night events this Saturday, August 1. The fair queen will be crowned ahead of the demolition derby, which starts at 7:30 p.m. at the fairgrounds arena at Mound City.
The girl who sells the most ticket earns the title, and in addition to saving fair attendees money on advance tickets, sales can be a lucrative summer job for the candidates. They earn 10% of ticket sales, and since all four candidates are saving for college, buying from them provides benefits all the way around.
Here is a brief biography for each candidate, and in the interest of fairness we drew their names out of a hat to determine order of appearance here.
We’ve included contact information, including phone numbers and email addresses. All of them have Facebook pages that are usually updated with the locations they will be selling from. Most of them post regularly where they will be selling tickets.
Kylie Freeman

Seventeen-year-old Kylie is a Mound City resident and the daughter of Ebb Freeman. A two-year member of the Jayhawk-Linn's FFA program, she is involved in land, dairy, and poultry judging as well as entomology. She recently earned seventh place in the land judging contest and has received her Greenhand and Chapter FFA degree awards.
An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and a nine-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, she likes to play softball and actively volunteers for clean-up activities around town. The American Legion Honorary Junior President for three years, her future goal is to attend college and earn a degree in education.
When she isn’t selling fair tickets, she likes fishing, camping, cooking, swimming, hiking, painting and hanging out with her friends.
Chloe Riley

Seventeen-year-old Chloe lives just outside Mound City and is the daughter of David and Bonnie Riley. She has been very active in the Busy Bugs 4-H Club for the past 10 years and is currently president of the club. She has also served as vice president for two years and treasurer for two years. Her 4-H projects include poultry, dog, photography, foods, style revue and favorite foods.
She has also been involved with the Jayhawk-Linn FFA organization for the past four years and will be competing in the swine show for the second time this year. A former Greenhand treasurer, Chloe also competes in food science, floriculture, entomology and agronomy events.
This coming year will be Chloe’s fourth year on the JLHS varsity cheerleading squad for both football and basketball. She will be squad captain for football. She has also attended several national events. In 2024 she was an All-American Cheerleader and performing in the 2024 Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Hawaii. This year, she’ll be performing for Varsity Spirit at DisneyWorld over spring break, as well as the Varsity Spirit inaugural performance in the 109th King Kamehameha Floral Parade in Hawaii.
She plans to continue her cheer career at the college level after she graduates next May. Her current interests range from psychology to cosmetology.
A former employee of Skyview Farms where she feed and milked cows, she now works at Cedar Crest Lodge. Her hobbies include travel, shopping and styling outfits, doing her nails, and spending time with family, friends, and her fat cat.

Just 16-years-old, Alyssa is already a licensed CNA working at Louisburg Healthcare and Rehabilitation. The rural Mound City queen candidate plans to continue in the medical field by attending the University of Kansas nursing program after she graduates next May.
A four-year member of Jayhawk FFA, she has earned Greenhand, Chapter and State degrees. For each of those four years, she has competed in the swine show. She has also attended State FFA Career Development Events for floriculture and food science.
The daughter of Jeff and Linda Cornelius, Alyssa likes painting, baking, shopping, and hanging out with her friends, family and dogs.

Tegan Harris is a volunteer who loves to make music and sing. The 17-year-old daughter of Robert and Amanda Maloney, she will be a senior at Jayhawk-Linn this fall.
She attends Mound City Christian Church, and she volunteers at camp and for numerous church events. She also volunteers for community service cleanup days for both church and school.
She is very active in school and will have been on the volleyball team and cheer squad for four years this fall. She has also participated in basketball, track and softball.
Playing guitar and singing are some of her favorite past times (she qualified for state choir in 2021). She also enjoys running, art, reading, cooking, and a variety of other sports.
Her plans after graduation in May are to attend either Pitt State University or Washburn University – hopefully on a volleyball scholarship. Last year she earned her CNA credentials and plans on becoming a licensed emergency medical technician this year. Her goal is to earn a degree in nursing.
