Hal Scott McAtee, age 74, of Osawatomie, Kansas, passed away Friday, August 8, 2025.

Hal was born March 19, 1951, in Council Grove, Kansas, the second of three children born to Ralph F. and Naomi A. (Nichols) McAtee. He grew up in Council Grove and attended local schools, graduating with the Class of 1969.


He then continued his education at Allen County Community College where he played on a track and football scholarship. He ran on the track team at Allen County, was fullback on the football team and studied business.


On October 3, 1972, Hal began working for the Missouri Pacific Railroad, which later became the Union Pacific Railroad. On May 17, 1975, he became a conductor, a role he held until his retirement in 1994.


In October of 1981, Hal was united in marriage to Mary K. Obermeier. To this union one son, Scott, was born. The marriage later ended in divorce.


Hal had a love for the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was an avid collector of coins and stamps and took great joy in planting native prairie flowers.


He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Cuyler McAtee. Survivors include his son, Scott McAtee of Spring Hill, Kansas; his sister, Debra (Steve) Levin of Kensington, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews.


Visitation 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday August 17, 2025, at the Eddy Birchard Funeral Home. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday August 18, 2025, at Greenwood Cemetery in Council Grove, KS. Memorials are to the American Heart Association, send c/o Eddy Birchard P.O. Box 430, Osawatomie, KS 66064.
