Organizers of “Colonial Day: Live Like It’s 1776” on Friday, July 3, are offering a step back in time to the founding of our country in honor of its 250th birthday. Sponsored by the Mound City Historical Society and the Mound City Library, the morning and early afternoon event will provide live music that harkens back to early years of the republic as well as food, games, informational demonstrations and more.
The day gets under way at 9 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. at the Mound City Historical Park and the Mound City Library, which are across the street from each other at the intersections of Seventh and Main streets in Mound City. Click here for the link to a city map.
Activities for kids and the kids-at-heart include Jacob’s Ladder, Cats Cradle, sack races, and a scavenger hunt. Blacksmith and beeswax candle making demonstrations run most of the day. A costume character will greet guests at the Montgomery cabin throughout the day.
Some of the creative demonstrations and workshops include tin punch art, pressed flower bookmark, and quilting and textiles. Food samples will also be served and the 4-H Club will serve free lemonade beginning at 11:30 a.m. to help chase the heat away.
Live music will be provided by local musicians during the event. Roger Sims will be performing songs from 1776 through the 1800s from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Carissa Shillito and Friends will perform colonial music from 10:30 to noon with a break at 11 a.m. for the National Anthem, reading of the Declaration of Independence, and the singing of “America the Beautiful.” Dave Ryan wraps up the musical side of the event from noon to 2 p.m.
