One of the rising stars in the rodeo specialty act category will be featured at the upcoming Linn County Fair Rodeo on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 9 and 10.
Seventeen-year-old Cheridyn Bateman of Silver City, Okla., is completing her first year of Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) membership.
“But don’t let Cheridyn’s age fool you,” said Jennifer Gatrel, who trains trick riders. “In my opinion, this extremely hard-working young lady is one of the most athletic of the talented new crop of Trick and Fancy Riders emerging on the rodeo scene.”
Gatrel is a former trick rider who operates a her Trick Riding School at Cowgill, Mo. She coaches aspiring young trick riders and is on the road with Pegasus Riders, a young troupe of trick riders that performs a horse expos and rodeos throughout the country.
Cheridyn Bateman’s parents, Jared and Dawn Bateman, recognized their daughter’s talent and interest in trick and roman riding at a young age and enabled her to work with several leading trick-riding veterans.
In addition to studying under Gatrel, Bateman has been mentored by Oklahoma-based Wendy Ratchford-Lattin and Dusti Crain-Dickerson in Illinois. Both of those women are established trick and roman riding rodeo performers.
Besides performing at amateur rodeos and horse expos since she was 11, Bateman has competed in several rodeo showcase events and trick riding competitions.
At age 11, she placed fourth in the youth division at the North American Trick Riding Championships. In 2021 at the age of 14, she won the youth division and was the overall highpoint winner at the 3 C Arena Trick and Roman Riding Competition at Kinmond, Ill.
Bateman’s equine partners performing with her at Mound City are Hollywood, a 17-year-old trick-riding mare and her Roman riding team, Legend, 7, and Ammo, 5.
Be sure to catch all the action at the Linn County PRCA Rodeo Aug 9-10 at Mound City, KS.
