Two drowning victims identified, donations sought to help their families

MOUND CITY – The Jayhawk USD 346 crisis team was called into action on Tuesday, Jan. 28, following the unthinkable – the accidental deaths of two Jayhawk Elementary School students on Monday evening.


Eight-year-old Keagan Grubbs and 9-year-old Bowonn Owen, both of rural Mound City were pronounced dead after their bodies were found trapped beneath the ice in a lake at the Lake Chaparral development. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office received a call at about 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, and the caller said the boys had been missing.

Jayhawk district Clerk Kayla McGrew said that several counselors and pastors were called in beginning on Tuesday to help JES students and staff process their grief.


Funeral services for the boys are pending at Schneider’s Funeral Home. The families of both boys are in need of financial assistance to pay for the services, and the funeral home is collecting donations to help them.
