MOUND CITY – Doing spring cleaning and wondering what to do with fishing and hunting equipment that is no longer used. Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has an answer.
Don George, a regional fisheries biologist and an outdoor educational coordinator with KDWP says that he gives away as many as 100 fishing poles every year to kids who may not be able to afford them or don't have anyone to help them decide what to buy. Those poles are donated to KDWP by individuals who are cleaning out garages and sheds, either their own or those of deceased relatives.
George said that he has a volunteer that goes through used fishing equipment, repairing reels or using damaged ones for parts. When they are distributed to children, the equipment is in very good condition.
George cited the example of a woman whose deceased father lived in northeast Kansas. Her father was an avid outdoor sportsman and left a trove of rods and tackle boxes when he passed away. Rather than sell the gear at a garage sale, the daughter donated it to KDWP, and in turn the agency gave it to several children.
George said KDWP also accepts donations of firearms and ammunition much the same way.
Those who have fishing and hunting gear to donate to KDWP can contact Don Geroge at 620-432-4863.
